Description
This gentle waterfall is in the north Georgia mountains at the foothills of the Appalachian range and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Amicalola Falls State Park, an 829 acre Georgia state park located between Ellijay and Dahlonega Georgia. According to Wikipedia, the park's name is derived from a Cherokee language word meaning "tumbling waters". Amicalola Falls is a 729-foot waterfall, making it the highest in Georgia. It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. An eight-mile trail that winds past Amicalola Falls and leads to Springer Mountain, famous for being the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, begins in the park.
The cool, damp air near the falls gives some welcome relief during the heat of the southern summer. Hikers flock to the area explore the many waterfalls and natural beauty of this region. When the Appalachian Trail was rerouted to end at Springer Mountain, Amicalola State Park began to serve as the access point for hikers. From the park, Springer is just over 8 miles using the Southern Terminus Trail.
