Description
This acrylic seascape represents an underwater coral reef as I imagine it with sailboats bringing eager divers and snorklers to explore the underwater world. There is another version where I cropped out the clouds. That is available as an original acrylic painting.
I'm not a diver, but I've seen many pictures of the beautiful, colorful coral and fish that inhabit these living reefs. Closest to home for me is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park off the east coast of Florida at Key Largo. Another famous ocean reef is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia, is the largest living thing on Earth, and even visible from outer space. The 2,300km-long ecosystem comprises thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands made of over 600 types of hard and soft coral. It's home to countless species of colourful fish, molluscs and starfish, plus turtles, dolphins and sharks. The Great Barrier Reef is reported to be greater in size than the United Kingdom, Holland and Switzerland combined.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a Florida State Park located on Key Largo in Florida, and includes approximately 70 nautical square miles of adjacent Atlantic Ocean waters. It was the first underwater park in the United States. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1972.
