Description
Brant Point Light is a lighthouse located on Nantucket Island off the coast of Cape Cod. The station was established in 1746, automated in 1965, and is still in operation. Brant Point Lighthouse is under the purview of the Coast Guard and is the latest of many that have been erected there. Removed from the lighthouse is an old weathered brick building that was used to store the oil which fueled the light before electricity. Nantucket lies about 30 miles south of Cape Cod and is a popular tourist destination in the summer months. It was a whaling community originally and the cobblestone streets were created from ballast from those whaling ships. Many of the old, historic homes feature widows walks where the whalers wives could have a high vantage point to watch for their men to come home from the sea.
