Description
This beautiful, cascading waterfall is in the Western North Carolina mountains near Highlands. Highlands is in the Blue Ridge Mountains which is part of the Appalachian Ridge. Cullasaja Falls is off of Highway 64 between Franklin and Highlands, North Carolina. It is on a dangerous stretch of road with more than a 100-foot drop off the sheer cliff to the river below. There is only a short pull off with space for three or four cars. The narrow road winds precipitously around a rock escarpment slowing traffic to a crawl (just hoping a large semi-trailer didn't get misrouted along the treacherous road). Fall is prime season in the mountains as visitors clog the roadways to view the often spectacular autumn colors in the mountains.
Highlands and this area of Western North Carolina is a popular tourist destination because of its proximity to the Appalachian Trail and other hiking destinations, as well as the many other waterfalls and the overall natural beauty of this region.
