Description
This returning fishing boat was seen at the Chatham Fish Pier on Cape Cod. The fishermen curse the flocks of swarming seagulls and seals that follow the boats as they return to the pier to offload the day's catch. The birds and seals fight for every morsel that ends up in the water. The gulls are so brazen that they try to steal the fish right off of the boat!
The Chatham Fish Pier is a working pier where local fishermen bring their day's catch to off load and ship the iced-down fish to restaurants and markets around New England. Visitors can watch the activities from a boardwalk. Across Aunt Lydia's Cove, the growing seal population eagerly awaits the return of the boats so they can drink the water with flavors of seafood or catch a morsel thrown overboard. Of course, the sea gulls fight for their share, as well. It is a popular local landmark.
According to the Chatham website, he Chatham Fish Pier serves as a thriving coastal commercial establishment as well as a popular tourist attraction. The Chatham Fish Pier includes the Fish Packing Building, and Observation Deck, along with other waterfront structures and infrastructure. Although the Town of Chatham is the largest tourist destination on the Cape, and the Fish Pier Observation Deck is the largest tourist destination in Chatham, the primary use of this facility is to support the Commercial Fishing Industry. On most spring, summer and early fall days, the parking lot is full and visitors crowd the railings of the observation deck to watch the seals and seagulls fighting for morsels from the off-loaded day's catch.
