Description
This landscape acrylic painting was inspired by memories of some of the beautiful clear springs I've seen in central and northern Florida. Most of the natural springs are exceptionally clear. Due to their constant year round temperatures and stable discharges , Florida's springs support a variety of plant life, including ancient cypress trees, rare orchids and lillies, and lush underwater carpets of eel grass.
Springs form where aquifer groundwater is forced up and onto the surface through openings in the ground. The Florida Aquifer is closest to the surface in the north-central part of the state and this is where the largest concentration of springs is. The largest springs, like Wakulla and Silver Springs, each discharges more than 65 million gallons of water a day - the equivalent of about 1.3 million bathtubs full!
Most of the springs are cool water, but Warm Mineral Springs is the only warm water mineral spring in the State of Florida, and is the largest water mineral spring in the world. The surface area of the spring, which is in southwest Florida in North Port, is a round pond, it is 1.4-acre in circumference and reaches depths of nearly 250 feet deep in the center.
There are may recreational opportunities in Florida's springs, including snorkeling, swimming, tubing, cave diving, kayaking, hiking, sightseeing on a glass-bottomed boat, and enjoying the abundant wildlife. At Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park visitors may sight manatees, black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, American crocodiles, and river otters. Many shore birds and fish species can also be seen in the crystal-clear waters.
