Description
This old telephone is featured as you enter The Palace Saloon in Fernandina Beach, Florida. The Palace Saloon is declared as Florida's oldest since 1903 (they even have a plaque to prove it).
According to the Elon University School of Communications website, the idea for the telephone came much sooner than it was brought to reality. While Italian innovator Antonio Meucci is credited with inventing the first basic phone in 1849, and Frenchman Charles Bourseul devised a phone in 1854, Alexander Graham Bell won the first U.S. patent for the device in 1876. Bell began his research in 1874 and had financial backers who gave him the best business plan for bringing it to market. Bell filed a patent describing his method of transmitting sounds on February 14, 1876, just hours before Elisha Gray filed a caveat (a statement of concept) on a similar method.

Fernandina Beach is on Amelia Island on the northeast coast of Florida. It is the northernmost city on Florida's Atlantic coast, and is one of the principal municipalities comprising Greater Jacksonville. The area was first inhabited by the Timucuan Indian tribe. Fernandina has had the flags of the following nations flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Republic of Florida, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. It is known as the "Isle of 8 Flags." It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags.
I am an exhibiting artist in southwest Florida and my art has been exhibited in galleries in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina and is in collections nationwide.
