Artist's Description
These are two of the fabled Oak Bluffs Gingerbread Houses on Cape Cod's Martha's Vineyard. In the mid-1800s, a Methodist camp meeting took place on a half-acre site at Oaks Bluff. Tents were erected for the meeting attendants. Over time, the meeting spot became a more permanent and small houses were built as year-round member housing. The cottages were built very close together out of necessity and a close-knit community arose. In 1880, the community became formally known as Cottage City. The name would later be changed to Oak Bluffs.
The community of quaint Gingerbread Houses to almost 500 over the island at one time. Today, only about 300 of them are left standing.
Martha's Vineyard is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It is the 58th largest island in the United States, with a land area of about 96 square miles. Thank you for taking time to visit my gallery. Enjoy the journey and please come back again. It is interesting to walk through my images and discover that, even back almost 40 years ago, I was intrigued by light, shapes, and color patterns. Back then I used a 35mm Canon film camera and I find many "abstract" images in my early work. Now I am currently exploring digital art, generally beginning with one of my photographs and seeing what new creations emerge. I consider the computer desktop my canvas and PhotoShop my paints and tools. I find, in my original and digital work, that I am still leaning to abstract. Although I may give a title to the image based on my vision, the interpretation is always up to the viewer. I always hope...
