Description
Nantucket Lightship LV 112 is one of several lightships to serve at Nantucket Shoals and did so from 1936 until 1942. She was removed then and was outfitted to serve as an examination vessel at the entrance to the harbor at Portland, Maine. During the war, LV 112 was again re-outfitted with Radar and set to detect approaching ships. After the war, she was returned to her former station and served there for the next thirty years except for a couple years when she served as a relief lightship.
Finally, after several owners and continued deterioration, in 2008 The United States Lightship Museum was formed to raise funds to take over the lightship and return her to Massachusetts. The group sailed the lightship back to Boston Harbor on May 11, 2010, where it was opened to the public starting in 2012 at Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina.
The lightship was designated a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2012.
This image was taken as I headed to Boston aboard a water taxi. I have digitally enhanced it with a sepia coloration and with a watercolor paper for an old look.
