Description
This is a slightly altered version of my original acrylic mixed media painting titled Home of the Ancients. I repainted portions on the original to more of a red hue and more shadows. I do like the original version, too, so I have kept it in my gallery. The original canvas is only 4 x 6. I began by applying an art paper I liked over the canvas. After evaluating what I saw, I began applying layers of paint to develop this abstract cliffside dwelling.
According to Touropia.com, cave dwellings have been found in many regions of the world. These caves served as dwellings and as places of worship and were usually combined with surface structures. After the cave cities ceased to be inhabited, the surface structures fell into ruin and only the caves remained. Not all cave dwellings have been deserted however. In certain areas of northern China cave dwellings are still common serving as the homes for more than 40 million people. Examples of such dwellings are Guyaju in China, Mesa Verde, located in southwestern Colorado, Canyon de Chelly in Arizona, and the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali, among others.
