Description
The view atop Jones Knob near Highlands, North Carolina, is worth the adventure. This wasn't the clearest of days, but the view of the clouds hanging below the mountains beyond was beautiful. The old, gnarled, weathered fallen tree lended just the right element to the view.
Highlands is a wonderful walkable resort town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was founded in 1875 after its two founders, Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson, drew lines from Chicago to Savannah and from New Orleans to New York City. They felt that the place where these lines met would eventually become a great trading center and commercial crossroads. Highlands was named for its lofty elevation. The official average elevation within town limits is 4,118 feet (1,255 m), making it one of the highest incorporated municipalities east of the Mississippi River. It's location in the Blue Ridge Mountains makes it an attractive destination of those who enjoy the outdoors and being in nature. Many national forests provide expansive mountain vistas, hiking trails and waterfalls.
