Description
On a cool mountain morning, there was still dew on the just opening blooms of this rhododendron bush. The violet color was beautiful against the deep green leaves.
Rhododendrons have been known since the sixteenth century. In the 1700s, there were six species known. Rhodies are now known to be a very large genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family. The catawba rhododendron is a big draw in the Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge when they flower in June. Their beautiful blossoms in violets and white adorn mountain paths and roadways.
