Description
While visiting the Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the canna lily leaves were still quite vibrant, but no flowers were blooming. It didn't matter, because the leaves are the most spectacular part of this beautiful plant. This close-up image emphasizes the variegation and curled leaves which create an abstract design. Cannas are not a true lily. The lineage is quite complicated and filled with Latin names of no consequence here. Cannas are renowned for their large, attractive foliage, and sport tall brightly colored flowers in the summer. Although mostly a tropical plant, it is grown in most regions during the warm season as an annual or taken indoors during cold weather.
