Description
Fall on Cape Cod means the cranberry bogs are ready to harvest. Cranberries have pockets of air inside the fruit. Because of this, cranberries float in water. The bogs are flooded to aid in removal of ripe, red fruit from the vines. Water reels, nicknamed “egg-beaters” are used to stir up the water in the bogs to further help dislodge the cranberries from the vines so they float to the surface of the water. Wooden or plastic “booms” are used to round up the berries, which are then lifted by conveyor or pumped into a truck to take them to the receiving station for cleaning. More than 90% of the crop is wet harvested. Wet harvested cranberries are used for juices, sauces, sweetened dried cranberries, ingredients in other processed foods or in nutraceutical products.
This is one of two original acrylic paintings of my abstract impression of a cranberry bog, such as seen on Cape Cod, as well as other states. Wisconsin is the leading producer of cranberries, producing 62 percent of the U.S crop in 2017. Other leading cranberry producing states include Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington.
The other painting in the series is Cranberry Harvest and the two would make a nice diptych display.
